Using a properly fitted mouth guard can make a big difference in not only comfort, but safety and performance. There are three types of athletic mouth guards available.
- Custom-fitted mouth guards – These mouth guards are individually designed and made in our dental office. These mouth guards provide the best possible fit and protection available. First, we make an impression of your teeth and then a mouth guard molded over the model using a special material.
- Stock or regular mouth guards – These mouth guards are found at your local athletic store, but provide little protection, do not stay in place, are bulky, uncomfortable, and can restrict breathing.
- Boil and bite mouth guards – These mouth guards are found at your local athletic store as well. They often lack proper extensions and repeatedly do not cover all the posterior teeth. They only protect the top teeth.
Night Guards are primarily designed to protect your teeth if you grind your teeth at night. Extensive grinding of your teeth (bruxism) at night will not only wear down your enamel but your tooth surface as well. It is not only important to protect your teeth, but to also determine the source of the grinding. Teeth grinding can be caused by stress, anxiety, abnormal bite, missing and crooked teeth. We can help you determine the source of your teeth grinding, but often it takes time to correct this issue. In the mean time, it would be a good idea to be fitted with a night guard.
